What Personal Branding Actually Is
It's the answer to "who is this person and why should I care?" when a recruiter Googles you. It's not about being famous — it's about being findable and credible.
The 3-Layer Framework
Layer 1: Searchable Presence
- LinkedIn profile optimized with keywords from target job descriptions
- GitHub with pinned, well-documented repositories
- A simple personal site (even a single page) at yourname.dev
Layer 2: Demonstrated Expertise
- One article, talk, or detailed GitHub README that shows depth
- A case study from a past project (even a side project)
- Contributions to open-source or community answers (Stack Overflow, Discord)
Layer 3: Social Proof
- Recommendations from managers and colleagues on LinkedIn
- Stars/forks on GitHub projects
- Speaking at a local meetup (even once)
What NOT to Do
- Daily "hot take" LinkedIn posts (exhausting to maintain, minimal ROI)
- Inflating titles or responsibilities
- Following every tech trend with generic "thoughts on AI" posts
The Minimum Viable Brand
- A polished LinkedIn with clear headline, detailed experience, and 3+ recommendations
- A GitHub with 2-3 good public repositories
- A personal site with your name, current role, contact, and portfolio
Tracking Your Brand's Impact
Watch: profile views (LinkedIn), GitHub stars/forks, inbound recruiter messages. If those are growing, your brand is working.
